restlessruminations: emilyposts: Ohmigoodness! I am so torn about whether or not I should join this run club. I went today to buy shoes and some gear for running outside in the cold. (I saved all the receipts in case I decided to return them.) It starts in February and we begin by training for a 7K that’s in May. I want to do it, but I’m seriously doubting that I can, and I do not want to be...

Confession
It’s been two months since my last run. During the marathon (which was actually my last run) I began experiencing severe pain in my left knee. I ran through it (it started at mile 9), and took tylenol around mile 18, and ran/walked the last few miles. I had easily run 18 miles before the marathon, so it was a bit of a disappointment, but I found my knee still hurting a month later so I went to...

A Guide to Overuse Knee Injuries →
I finally saw the doc this past week, and he let me know my knee pain isn’t something that’s too hard to fix. During the marathon, I began experiencing pain in my left knee near the top inside corner, and it hasn’t gone away. I’ve basically aggravated the cartilage under my patella (knee cap) due to flat feet and weak leg muscles. Now it would seem that since I trained for...

I met Stephan at 5AM marathon morning.  He’s a Swiss Achilles volunteer whose athlete couldn’t make it to the race.  I helped get him re-assigned to my team Achilles Japan. He’s a great guy, with a wonderful story to tell.

Running In Cold Weather!! →
Since I didn’t take up running until late Spring, I have no idea of how to properly dress for running in cold weather. I’m actually pretty excited about running in the winter (if the doctor gives my knee the all-clear), so this article about what to wear for winter running is just what I need. Sure, running gear is expensive, but at least you only wear it for a season at a time. ...

Road Runner Rage →
You’re minding your own business while on an empowering run, and then a car, a motorist, oversteps their bounds, and BAM! you’ve been hit by a car. It’s safe to say I think about this on just about every run, playing out the senario in my head, pondering how I would react. Thankfully, this has never actually happened, but in my dream-like senarios, I find myself angered at the...

How Fast Should You Be Running? →
I highly recommend learning how to run at a conversational pace if you’re just starting to run. This technique allowed me to go from not running at all to running a marathon. Now that I’ve finished my first marathon, I’ll be adding a little speed training once a week (after I’ve recovered), but during my first go-round, my conversational pace naturally sped up, as will...

I have blogged about running lately...
…and for this I am sorry.  I know you were all losing sleep over it.  The thing is, running has been a pain in my ass lately, both figuratively and literally.  I spent July and August training for a marathon I can no longer run, logging as many as fifty miles a week and devouring thousands and thousands of calories daily.  Two weeks ago I decided not to do 26.2, scaled back the numbers, and...

3 Days 'til NYC
This Sunday is the New York City Marathon.  You’d think that this being my 17th consecutive NYC I’d be taking everything in stride, but once again I’m nervous as hell.  Everything hurts, I can’t sleep, I think I’m getting a cold.  I’m irritable.  I don’t want to be at work.  I’m not eating enough.  I’m eating a lot of Halloween crap laying around my house. I’m not even a registered entry either....

Pre-Race, Easy Does It
Tonight is Thursday and the race is on Sunday. I fly out tomorrow to San Francisco with the Team, and despite the looming marathon I’ve been doing ok. I was mostly nervous for this past week, but with Saturday’s and Tuesday’s runs with the Team, I was leaning towards more excited. Of course, as soon as I step away from them, the nerves return. But, no big deal, as long as I can...

5K - Racing vs Running →
Most of my running has been about just that, running. I’m so new to it that I don’t want to overwhelm myself with the pressure of the race. I’ve focused more on just learning how to run properly without getting injured, and learning to eat, sleep, and behave for running. I think I’ve finally achieved that, and in 10 days I will be running my first marathon, but not for...

The Nike Women’s Marathon in San Francisco is 14 days away!! Here’s my last fundraiser: I’m raising money for each mile. It’s going to work like a sponsorship. Each mile is worth $50 (because if I “sell” all 26 miles, then I will reach my fundraising goal of $5,000.00!! 9/26/08 For those of y’all just tuning in (I thank you!), the whole point of me running this marathon is to find a cure for cancer, blood cancers to be more specific. By raising money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, we are seeding research to find a cure for all cancers as most medical breakthroughs in the field of cancer research has come from blood cancer research (chemotherapy,...

How To Take a Post-Run Ice Bath →
One of our TNT coaches, Christine Luff, writes for About.com’s “Running & Jogging” section. I signed up for their newsletter, because she’s constantly giving amazing advice on training. This week one of her topics was “How To Take a Post-Run Ice Bath.” Ice baths are sort of like running. They seem like an awesome idea, and you know you’re gonna feel...

7 Miles…on a Thursday Night So the nerves have kicked in. I’m a little less than 2 months away from the marathon, and everytime someone asks me about it, my stomach knots up instantly. Pre-Run Snack
Today’s snack is a cup of yogurt with raw almonds mixed in. I though about adding flax seeds until I realized how much fiber is in them (fiber before a run = bad news). I’m making sure to eat it at least an hour and a half before my run. What’s your favorite thing to eat before a run? Leave a comment! -submitted by MDF

Knowing When To Listen To Your Body
A key part of running is knowing how to listen to your body. When it’s time to slow down, speed up, continue to run through pain and when to stop. You may not know at first what’s small aches and pains you can run through and what you should stop yourself before it gets too serious. Every person is a bit different. For me I experience a pain in my knee it’s not an overwhelming...

My Options for Saturday's Run
I can either run 13 or 15 miles on Saturday. Part of me knows 13 is the safe option, but I’m thinking making the jump now to 15 will pay off for the next month’s training. Here’s the two route options…both take advantage of the Summer Streets. 13 Miles 15 Miles Previously, the most I’ve run is 12 miles twice, and my last long run was 10. So what do you think?...

On Nike.com there’s a second-hand account of Ramon’s run 100 mile run in Vermont a few weeks ago. He’s the head coach of the NYC Team In Training, and without him, I’m not sure I’d be this far into my own training. Congrats Ramon! Breaking Through Your Lack of Motivation
Motivation is a tricky thing. It can be quite slippery, and at times allude us to the point at which we can’t see our way of the funk that defines a “complete lack of motivation.” http://www.teamhoyt.com/history.shtml The link above is a story full of win that got me thinking about my motivation, why I’m motivated to run, and why I wasn’t before. Run With Me 1.3 This run was BRUTAL! It began on the Manhattan side of the George Washington Bridge, and into the NJ Palisades. I still don’t know what I was thinking running 12 miles (up from 10), with all those hills and in that heat. However, I do know that having bad days only makes the good days feel better. This day was particularly bad because I hadn’t run in a week from being...

Three Things I've Learned About Running
I was checking out FitSugar, and came across an interesting reader question. Someone wrote in and asked “Why does running feel bad?” I couldn’t help but think about when I first started running three months ago. I was miserable, barely able to run for more than minutes at a time before needing to stop and walk. And while that’s ok, and a natural place for anyone to start...
