Pre-Race, Easy Does It
Tonight is Thursday and the race is on Sunday. I fly out tomorrow to San Francisco with the Team, and despite the looming marathon I’ve been doing ok. I was mostly nervous for this past week, but with Saturday’s and Tuesday’s runs with the Team, I was leaning towards more excited. Of course, as soon as I step away from them, the nerves return. But, no big deal, as long as I can keep down my food, I’ll be fine.
If there is one thing I’m trying to focus on, it’s doing NOTHING new. Not one thing. Trying no new food, staying away from all the foods I know make me sick (corn, spicy, and a variety of other foods I love, but that running doesn’t agree with), and literally, not doing anything different.
This is actually harder than it seems because it’s a major break in my routine. I’m taking off of work, I’m flying, I’m sleeping in a hotel, and I don’t have my favorite toaster waffles with the French imported blackberry jelly and natural peanut butter (though I’m told Starbucks in our hotel is open at 5:30, with the marathon starting at 7am), so really, EVERYTHING will be new.
But despite that, I can lean on my teammates, friends, and family for moral support, and that’s what’s really going to get me to mile 26.
See you there.
