I finally saw the doc this past week, and he let me know my knee pain isn’t something that’s too hard to fix. During the marathon, I began experiencing pain in my left knee near the top inside corner, and it hasn’t gone away.
I’ve basically aggravated the cartilage under my patella (knee cap) due to flat feet and weak leg muscles. Now it would seem that since I trained for the marathon for 5+ months that I should have crazy strong legs, but running isn’t enough to remain a healthy runner.
This article by McKinley Health Center has a guide to knee pain outlining what cross training you can work into your training to treat common overuse problems. It also lets you know when the pain is something you should see a doctor about.
With a little physical therapy, orthotics for my shoes, and a short course of anti-inflammatories I’ll be back running in no time, but I’ll be keeping these things in mind to prevent any further injuries and trips to the doctor.
Thanks for the link Maria!
